Virgil van Dijk considers future in Liverpool and Netherlands
Virgil van Dijk has revealed he will consider his future with both Liverpool and the Netherlands after his country were eliminated from EURO 2024.
The Dutchman and his side were knocked out of the tournament in Germany despite taking the lead in the semi-finals through Xavi Simons, Harry Kane equalising from the penalty spot and Ollie Watkins scoring in the 90+1 minute to give England a comeback.
Van Dijk has revealed that he will now consider his next steps at both club and international level. The 33-year-old has one more season left on his Anfield contract.
“I don’t have any idea at the moment,” he told reporters. “I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player. Then we will move on, but first recover from this.”
Van Dijk will not play in the EURO final.
“After a season like this, where so much has happened, you finally feel emotional knowing it’s over.”
Van Dijk’s Liverpool endured an emotional 2023/24 season as long-time boss Klopp departed. They had hoped for Premier League and Europa League glory following their League Cup success in February, but the Merseysiders failed to deliver in those competitions.
