Copa America: Setting a record of 1.1 million viewers, Messi creates a huge effect

Copa America attracts viewers no less than EURO, as evidenced by the fact that after the group stage, the tournament set a record of 1.1 million viewers.

In the 3 group stage matches, with the Messi effect, the Argentina team set a record when welcoming 216,642 spectators to the stadium. Argentina also holds the record for the match with the highest number of spectators attending the Copa America 2024 to date: the 1-0 victory over Chile at MetLife Stadium (New Jersey) on June 26 with 81,106 spectators. This match surpassed the record of the opening match on June 21 (also Argentina won 2-0 against Canada) with 70,564 spectators.

Talking numbers

The top match in Group B, Mexico vs Venezuela (lost 0-1) on June 27 had 72,773 spectators at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The match that decided the first and second place in Group D, Brazil vs Colombia (1-1) on July 3 had 70,971 spectators at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. This number of spectators accounted for the majority of the more than 1.1 million viewers in total of 24 group stage matches of Copa America 2024. Of which, Mexico ranked 2nd after Argentina, with a total of 189,101 viewers, Brazil ranked 3rd with 179,068 viewers in 3 group stage matches. Meanwhile, the host team USA had only 162,478 spectators to support.

The total number of viewers for Copa America 2024 after just the group stage has now surpassed the record for the entire tournament in 2019 in Brazil (867,245), nearly matching the approximately 1.4 million viewers who watched the entire tournament at Copa America 2016 (also featuring 16 teams and taking place in the US).

Record-breaking match with Messi’s presence

The audience was extremely crowded.

Compared to EURO 2024, which will take place in Germany after the group stage with 36 matches, with about 1.8 million viewers (including the round of 16 matches, which is 44, there are currently 2.2 million viewers), the audience number at Copa America is not much different. On average, Copa America 2024 has had more than 46,000 viewers per match so far, while EURO 2024 has had more than 51,000 viewers per match.

However, Copa America still has many matches with very few viewers and very high ticket prices. Among them, the match that set a record for the least viewers was Costa Rica’s 2-1 win over Paraguay on July 3, with only 12,765 spectators attending Q2 Stadium (with a capacity of more than 20,000 seats) in Austin, Texas. Ticket prices range from $70 (about 1.7 million VND) to $200 (over 5 million VND), forcing spectators to choose the most attractive matches to buy.
