JD Vance heard on hot mic discussing lengthy Trump speech: ‘I don’t know how you do this’

Vice President JD Vance didn’t hold back about having to sit through President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night, which broke the record for the longest presidential address to Congress.

A hot mic picked up a conversation between Vance and Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson ahead of the President’s lengthy speech. “By the way, I think the speech is going to be great. But I don’t know how you do this for 90 minutes,” Vance told Johnson. The video shows Johnson then lowering the active microphone.

Trump’s speech lasted one hour and 40 minutes, beating out former President Bill Clinton’s previous record for his State of the Union address, where Clinton spoke for one hour, 28 minutes, according to The American Presidency Project.

Trump joint address was longer; pulled lower TV ratings

In his address to Congress, Trump spoke on tariffs, inflation, immigration, anti-DEI efforts and DOGE’s cuts to the federal government. The prime time address raked in an estimated 36.6 million viewers, which was lower than any of Trump’s first four addresses to Congress in his previous administration, USA TODAY reports.
